Feeling a little stressed?

Lessen your stress by stocking your cupboards with foods that help you relax.

Here are four foods to get you started:

  1. Dark Chocolate is a major de-stressor.  It is high in flavonoids, which are plant compounds that are known for their relaxing effects.  Chocolate with a cocoa content of 60% or higher contains very high flavanoid concentrations.   Dark chocolate also contains phenethylamine, which is a natural mood-enhancing chemical.
  2. Sunflower Seeds are also a good source of folate.  Folate promotes the de-stressing chemical called dopamine.
  3. Blueberries are very high in antioxidants.  Not only do antioxidants fight cancer cells, they help counter the negative effects of stress hormones, like cortisol.
  4. Omega-3 foods have many health benefits.  One of these benefits is that Omega-3 rich foods, such as salmon, flaxseed, trout, soybeans, and walnuts, suppress hormones and boost serotonin, the “feel-good” hormone.
