What is Grout

Grout is a sealant that’s applied between tiles giving strength and providing a degree of protection to prevent chipping and cracking. It serves an essential role in the durability of flooring and walls where used.

Though grout isn’t a primary focus of the design, it contributes greatly to the overall look. This is why homeowners should take care in their decision and understand its impact on their project. Selecting the wrong type, applying it incorrectly, or choosing a disagreeable color could tank your project. Making good decisions for planning and maintenance will leave you with a beautiful and long-lasting look.

Because of the way it sits next to tile, cleaning grout isn’t always easy and, therefore, neglected over time (unintentionally or not). It’s a material that easily attracts dirt, mold, mildew, and general stains. Because of this, it’s important to know how to clean tile grout. There are effective cleaners that many of us have used at some point in our lives, but not all are healthy for our families or pets.

As a leader in the residential cleaning industry for over 30 years, Maid Brigade has developed what we believe are the best ways to clean grout more efficiently and in healthier ways.

Consider how different areas of the home should be taken into account when selecting a proper cleaning solution. For example, we may choose to use different ingredients in the kitchen than in our master bathroom. This is not only because food is prepared in the kitchen, but the primary cause of grout stains in each is different. Fortunately, Maid Brigade has the experience and knowledge to help no matter the cleaning need or its location in your home.

How to Clean Grout

When cleaning tile grout, using natural recipes/methods is not only effective but also cost conscious. The ingredients we recommend are basic (but effective) and found in most people’s homes. No matter the size of your task, we always recommend starting with the mildest cleaning solution and working your way to stronger ones. Maid Brigade always recommends caution and proper equipment when combining solutions, and here are some of our favorite grout cleaning tips:

1. Mix a half cup of hydrogen peroxide for every cup of water in a spray bottle.

2. Spray the cleaning mixture on the affected areas.

3. Clean and rinse with water.

4. After rinsing make sure to towel the floor dry.

● You can also substitute vinegar for the hydrogen peroxide and get the same clean effect. If there are areas with additional build-up won’t come clean using the instruction above, try a stiff brush and scrub.

● A new toothbrush works best. Old ones tend to be too soft, and more extreme wire-bristled brushes can result in damage to the grout or surrounding tiles.

● Also, do not use bleach because it can potentially stain and cause yellowing.
