What’s Your Greatest Accomplishment?

August 05, 2015

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

If someone asks you what your greatest accomplishment in life is, do you know the answer? I’ve been asked this question a few times during job interviews. I never really knew how to respond. The first time, I was  twenty-something, and was not, for some reason, prepared to answer such a loaded question on a job interview. I just sat there waiting for the perfect answer choice to jump out at me! It never did. Now that I am “a little older,” do I know what my most major accomplishment is?

This kind of question had me thinking about my life. The problem is, this question has me thinking about EVERYTHING in my life. The good times, the bad times, the tough times, the hard times, the sad times, the confusing times. You name it, I’ve been thinking about it. I feel a bit like a therapist as I figure out how all these things in life have contributed to my most major accomplishment, whatever that is.

This powerful question has brought a lot of guilt. As a stay-at-home mom, I felt guilty not having a successful career, and then as a working mom in the corporate world, I felt guilty not being home enough for my three children. Is success raising three children, or is success having a business and a nursing degree AND a successful career? I have made many sacrifices in my life to support others along the way…could that be my accomplishment? For most of us, it is almost impossible to define the one “major” accomplishment in our lives, the greatness in life that we’ve all yearned for.

Before becoming Maid Brigade’s Consumer Health Advocate, I worked as a Wellness Manager in a large corporation. In our monthly newsletter I once asked the employees to answer the question, “What is your most major accomplishment in life?” The response was nothing but inspiring. The majority answered that their accomplishments related to contributing to our environment, discovering one’s self, and selfless acts of kindness.

I’ve realized that whether it’s becoming independent, going for a masters degree, patching up a long lost relationship, living life on our own terms, finding empowerment, finishing college, or raising children, we all have accomplishments for which we can be proud, because we are all mostly good people who strive to do more for ourselves and our surroundings.

Perhaps my greatest accomplishment is using the internet as a “platform” to spread my beliefs and messages to the masses, hopefully inspiring, educating, and entertaining all of you who take 5-10 minutes out of your day to read this.  Or maybe my greatest accomplishment is realizing that each of us can contribute to making a difference in the world – right here, right now.

Here are some inspiring thoughts I’d like to share with you all, with the hope of helping you accomplish the great things you desire for yourself. Enjoy!

Your greatest accomplishment is everything you have done that has helped you to arrive at this very moment – now.

Remember, your past does not define your future. Your future is ahead of you. When thinking about your greatest accomplishments, think about where you are today. Think about all the good in your life and the good you bring to the world around you.

The ability to live in the moment without dwelling on the past is an amazing and admirable thing.

Do what you believe in and what you think can bring change to the world.

Allow yourself to be who you really are. Be proud to be “you!”
