In a new study of indoor air quality in homes, the researchers discovered startling amounts of pollution. A total of 586 individual chemicals were identified. The pesticides diazinon and chlorpyrifos were found in the greatest amounts and both were found in all of the 52 homes tested. These two chemicals were banned several years ago in the U.S.! Very high levels of phthalates, plasticizers that can cause disruption of hormones and developmental problems, were also found in the 52 homes studied. This study supports prior studies that reveal people can be exposed to phthalates through dust and air, a surprise as discussed in previous editions of Wellness Wire. Many of the chemicals discovered were not identifiable. A disturbing aspect of the report is that the synergistic aspects of the 586 chemicals studied have not been determined.
