The mosquitoes are ferocious in the Northeast with so much rain, and many people and parents are reaching for “deet” to ward them off. Even some pediatricians recommend it. But is it the best choice? A new study suggests that deet affects the central nervous system in the same way as nerve gas does, and may be behind Gulf War Syndrome, since so many soldiers used deet and other insecticides that affect brain neurotransmitters. Researchers are working to determine how much deet is considered safe. Deet is used by some 2 million people a year.
