According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 155,000 baby recliners are being recalled because of five recent reported fatalities.
Nap Nanny Generations One and Two were recalled, as well as the Chill model of infant recliners. The recliners were made from Baby Matters, in Berwyn, Pa.
The recliners contain design defects that could pose risk of injury and death to infants.
According to the Commission, there were 92 reported incidences of infants “hanging or falling out over the side of the Nap Nanny. Four deaths were linked to the first versions of the recliner, and one to the newer model. Most of these infants were even placed in the harness while it happened.
All were sold between 2009 and 2012. The Nap Nanny was designed to mimic the curves of a baby car seat, elevating an infant slightly to help reduce reflux, gas, stuffiness or other problems.
Amazon.com, Buy Buy Baby, Diapers.com and Toys R Us/Babies R Us, have voluntarily agreed to participate in the recall of the Nap Nanny because Baby Matters is unwilling to participate.
Five thousand Nap Nanny Generation One and 50,000 Generation Two models were sold between 2009 and early 2012. About 100,000 Chill models have been sold since January 2011.
Baby Matters still stands behind their product 100% and reports that if used properly, the Nap Nanny does not injure infants.
