Cutting Costs Starts Right in Your Own Bathroom

September 28, 2011

Did you know that it is possible to save money while living green?  Let’s start by taking a look at the bathroom.

According to the U.S. Environmental Agency, here are five very helpful ways to cut your costs down in the bathroom:

Replacing your old toilet with a new model could cut your water usage by about 46%. Toilets account for almost 30% of a home’s water use.  Sine 1992, the government has required that toilets use no more than 1.6 gallons per flush (GPF).  If your home was built before 1992, your toilet could be using as much as 3.5 GPF.  The date stamped on the tank’s lid tells you how old it is.

The EPA recommends that you test for leaks by placing a drop of food coloring in your toilet’s tank. The average American household of 4 people can use 400 gallons of water a day, so losing 200 gallons more daily because of a leaky toilet is a huge waste.    If the color shows in the bowl without flushing, you have a leak.

Installing an aerator on your faucet can cut your faucet’s water usage from 5 gallons per minute (GPM) to 2.75 gallons or less.  The most efficient models use only 1 gallon.  If you don’t have a 1 GPM model, replace it and save more water.

Replace a standard 4.5 GPM shower head with a 2.5 GPM shower head and you can save 20,000 gallons of water per year for as little as five dollars.

Cutting down on the time you spend in the shower can also cut greenhouse gas emissions.  Over one year, your showers can contribute to 1,300 pounds of greenhouse gas (carbon dioxide) to the atmosphere because of the energy needed to heat the water.  You can save about 340 pounds if you take 2 minutes off of your shower time.
