Look to Your Pillow for Fire Retardants – Wellness Wire

In a sobering study, researchers have found that the two places where human beings get their highest exposure to one type of fire retardant, polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDE’s), are pillows and car seats. The products that have the highest amount of PBDEs are computers and televisions, but the difference in exposure levels is proximity and the different type of outgassing of the materials. Exposure to PBDEs is of concern as animal studies suggest they may impact neurodevelopment. Human studies also reported links with testosterone and thyroid hormone levels. People who sleep on foam pillows had the highest exposure, as did people who sat on fabric, not leather, car seats.
