Memorial Day…. Fun, sun, relaxing, enjoying the outdoors and best of all…barbeques!
This year, why not try a different approach to your holiday weekend by thinking of the environment and going green?
Instead of grilling hot dogs and burgers, opt for healthier foods such as turkey, grass-fed beef, free range chicken, or wild fish. Why not grill those vegetables and tofu? How about adding organic fruits and vegetables to your salads? Stock up on fresh tomatoes and watermelon, which contain lycopene, an antioxidant that also helps keep sunburn away.
If you are not planning on using a gas grill for your weekend barbeque, try using a charcoal chimney, which is much safer than lighter fluid. Use natural, hardwood charcoal instead of the conventional briquettes.
Fill your grill as much as possible with produce. Produce is healthier and does not yield carcinogens, which form on grilled meats. Grill your foods over a low-to-medium flame. Avoid charring. Flare-ups and smoking oil can create carcinogens. Marinate and baste your food with oil, honey or barbeque sauce to help prevent charring.
Reusable plates, bowls and utensils is very eco-friendly, but if your preference is to use disposable paper products, make sure they are compostable or made from recycled, BPA-free plastic. Opt for recycled paper napkins and cloths that look beautiful on any table!
Organic, chemical free sunscreen and insect repellents are a much healthier and safer alternative to conventional products. Consider spraying your yard in advance with a garlic spray to ward off mosquitoes. Start your cookout after peak sun time, between 10 and 2, and provide shade for your guests.
Organize activities for all ages. If your cookout is near the water, swimming and kayaking are fun. If not, set up a volleyball/badminton net and get the teens involved in a tournament. Croquet appeals to all ages and a nature walk or an outside scavenger hunt is a great way to get the kids interested in the outdoors.
Always remember to compost leftover fruits and vegetables. Recycle cans, bottles and any other recyclable items properly.
Be good to our planet!
