The Best All Natural Bug Sprays

July 12, 2011

Research has proven that plant oils are a natural way to both repel and kill insects.

Here are some to try:

Citronella Oil

Often found in candles, citronella oil is also available for topical use. It has a distinct lemony fragrance, which makes it easily identifiable.

Research has proved citronella oil to be a natural, safe and effective method for repelling mosquitoes, although it should be applied every 30-60 minutes for the best results.

Citronella oil should not be used on children under 3 years of age, as it may irritate their sensitive skin. You should also ensure the formula you are using does not contain additional synthetic chemicals.

Neem Oil

Extracted from the neem tree in India, neem oil is available in soaps and sprays. It is strongly scented, but very effective on a wide variety of household and outdoor pests.

Typically, neem oil is combined with water and applied to and around plants. The soap may be applied to the skin to act as a repellent, and may also heal acne and other skin problems.

When buying neem oil, it is best to purchase the cold pressed, organic variety. Also, make sure the formula doesn’t contain any synthetic solvents, as they may be harmful to yourself and the environment.

Neem oil may also be harmful to pregnant women.

Lemon Eucalyptus Oil

Pure lemon eucalpytus oil is a highly effective bug repellent. It has been proven to last long and work as well as products that contain DEET.

The oil may be applied directly to the skin or mixed in with a fragrance-free body lotion. However, you should try the oil on a small part of your skin to ensure that a rash won’t occur.

EcoSMART’s Plant Oil Combination

EcoSMART’s natural bug spray contains a combination of plant oils like cinnamon, spearmint, rosemary and clove which safely and effectively kills and repels insects. It has a light cinnamon fragrance.

Their formula is safe for use around children and pets, making it an ideal solution for natural home pest control.  Composed of completely natural substances, it is a great environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic pesticides.

You don’t have to use just one of these oils. Using various products will only enhance the benefits of each product.

Plant oils make the best natural bug spray because they are eco-friendly and effective solutions to ward off pests.
