Kitchen Cleaning Tips for a Healthier Home
The kitchen can get dirty pretty quickly. It’s one of the highest-traffic areas in the home. Those dirty counter tops, the stinky garbage disposal, the sponges hanging out in your sink–they’re all teeming with bacteria. You can do something about it. Taking some time daily and weekly to clean your kitchen or to hire a professional to clean will help you to rest assured that your kitchen is looking its best. At Maid Brigade, we’re committed to using chemical free cleaning products, so we recommend the same for anyone who wants to tackle a cleaning project on their own. The areas that get the most traffic need the most frequent attention. This means cleaning your countertops, refrigerator, range, appliances, cabinets and floors.
The surfaces you use to store food, prepare and cook meals need cleaning often. Granite counter tops, other stone counters, and composite counters need to be sanitized and wiped. A daily wipe down is recommended. The best way to clean granite countertops is by mixing a little dish detergent and warm water. This soapy mixture followed by rinsing and then drying with microfiber cloths will take care of the daily maintenance of your counters. When you clean your counters, it’s best to remove everything from them: appliances, dishes, foods and utensils.
The cabinets are one of the most overlooked areas that need to be cleaned. You transfer bacteria from your hands to their handles every day. The lower kitchen cabinets often get soiled from spills that happen when preparing and cooking meals. Regularly cleaning both the inside and outside of your cabinets will keep your kitchen looking great and deter bacteria from setting up shop. To get your cabinets looking their best, you’ve got a few options. Combine water with either vinegar, detergent or baking soda to treat the affected surfaces then rinse away with a clean wet sponge and dry with a paper towel or microfiber cloth.
- A general rule of thumb is to clean from top to bottom: start with the top of the fridge, the highest cabinets and the range hood and work your way down, finishing with sweeping, taking out the trash and mopping the floor. When getting started, fill the sink with hot soapy water to soak any pesky items like the microwave turntable, crumb trays or a refrigerator drawer. Once you’re done with the items in the sink, Drain the sink and rinse it out with hot water. Wipe out the basin with a mild abrasive cleanser and a microfiber cloth then rinse it out with hot water.
- When deep cleaning your kitchen, you should take the time to clean your appliances, range top and refrigerator. For stubborn areas, it’s best to soak them in cleaning solution for a few minutes before trying to scrub them clean. A good way to multitask this is to spray the surfaces down and let them soak while you tackle the upper cabinets and high surfaces.
- If you have any stainless steel surfaces in your kitchen like the door to the fridge or dishwasher, clean them with a mixture of water and white vinegar, then wipe them dry.
- Another problem to address is the presence of flies in your kitchen. If you’ve got flies, you have a problem. These annoying little pests can carry harmful bacteria. There are some remedies you can try to get rid of the flies. Step one is clean and dry any damp areas and to get any old fruit, spoiled foods or old trash out of your home. Next, set up a mixture of soap and apple cider vinegar in a small cup or jar. The flies will be attracted to the mix and will get trapped in the solution.
